The perfect green smoothie to enjoy everyday

Breakfast has been a simple and nutritious affair in our house for years. Fried eggs and a green smoothie everyday! Surprisingly, none of us, adults or kids, has complained about eating the same thing every morning. We occasionally do oatmeal instead of eggs, but we never skip the smoothie.

I tinker with the recipe all the time, but the smoothie always has a big bunch of leafy greens, a substantial amount of healthy fats, and wellness boosting spices. Here’s my standard recipe for our family of four:

Ingredients

  • A big bunch of baby spinach. 4-5 cups.

  • A small bunch of baby kale. 2-3 cups.

  • Optionally, a fistful of arugula, mixed spring greens, or beet/radish/carrot greens.
  • 2 ripe bananas. Or 2 beets, steamed and peeled (This makes it more of a red smoothie!).

  • 1 just ripe avocado. The healthy fats in avocados help you feel full. They also maximize the absorption of anti-inflammatory Turmeric. Tip: Out of avocados? Decent substitutes are: ¾ cup oats, or half a can of full fat coconut milk.

  • 3-4 slivers of ginger.

  • ½ cup seeds. Either pumpkin, sunflower, flax, or chia. Or a combination.

  • 1 tablespoon turmeric. (Learn more about its anti-inflammatory powers)

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper. (See how it helps your body absorb the curcumin on turmeric)

  • 1 teaspoon cardamom, nutmeg or cinnamon. My personal favorite is cardamom. These spices not only do wonders for the taste of the final creation, but they can have incredible health benefits.

  • A generous squeeze of lemon to facilitate the absorption of iron in the spinach and kale
  • About 2 cups of water. We don’t use ice, but feel free to do so if you prefer.

Method

Put all ingredients in a powerful blender. Pulse a few times and then blend for about one minute. Side note, after going through a couple of Ninja blenders, I finally invested in a commercial blender to withstand daily use. This thing has been going strong for 3 years!

Finally, serve and let your body enjoy the goodness that comes with these wonderful ingredients.
